Union of Concerned Scientists Rock!

Go here, go here now! Now we are getting some people to fight back against the cascading torrent of policy decisions the Bush administration has taken, almost without serious opposition. Health, safety and environment - these are the second priority triumvirant for me in facing the Election of 2004. First, the Economy. And reversal of just how and why money makes policy in a horror show of shameful US government actions under Bush.
"On a wide range of issues the Bush administration is suppressing and distorting scientific analysis from federal agencies and taking actions that have undermined the quality of scientific advisory panels. This misuse of science has serious consequences for our health, safety, and environment. Today UCS is launching a major campaign to stop this threat." ... Link
Tips for Link Junkies

I've been playing today with some of my fav sites for reference and current links to news articles and essays I appreciate. Using Notepad is slow, but it does work. Using NoteTab Light is much much better! With an IE browser, navigate to your chosen site. Select
In NoteTab light, all you do now is select from the toolbar "Modify" and then "Strip html" and then "Preserve URLs". Voila, less than a minute you have all the links, ready to go for your surfing pleasure and saving to file.
In Notepad, you will be spending lots of time using the "Replace" function from the Edit feature. I start by copying into the pop-up replace window the most common html codes. To make sure these appear online in this blog, I will put a space before and after the tags, and leave off the last > of the tag. < br < font < bg color < p and other common ones like spacers using & n b s p ; (of course I have spaced out that particular code).
The other thing I usually prepare with both stripped-down link lists is make sure that the links are "clickable" by inserting < a href and the = and the "http:// for each URL preserved. Sometimes you will see only the http without the quote marks or a partial url based on a css style sheet of tags. When that is found, you will go back into the site and "right-click" on any link there and select "copy shortcut" to get the entire prefix to the shortened url code used in css. For example, if you see: instant.html/"> you will put in something like "http:// www.something .com/instant .html (without the spaces. See how the ending suffix comes after the slash? Different browsers comply more or less with standards of coding, so I always make sure the suffix tag of the links end as this example: /">Name of Site and then
If you have a blog or website with available page space, try making a table of your fav links, for easy use in surfing online when you are not home with your own computer. Much easier to use when you have just what you want and no extra banners, ads, or text to distract you. Here are a few good sites that offer much worthwhile for capturing links: ... Link
CBS Censors Political and Issue Ads!

This is copied straight from an email I received today from a friend, just prior to opening the message sent directly from MoveOn.org. Here it is in full, and the link for the petition is included. Subject: The ad CBS will not air Dear friend, During this year's Super Bowl, you'll see ads sponsored by beer companies, tobacco companies, and the Bush White House. But you won't see the winning ad in MoveOn.org Voter Fund's Bush in 30 Seconds ad contest. CBS refuses to air it. Meanwhile, the White House and Congressional Republicans are on the verge of signing into law a deal which Senator John McCain (R-AZ) says is custom-tailored for CBS and Fox, allowing the two networks to grow much bigger. CBS lobbied hard for this rule change; MoveOn.org members across the country lobbied against it; and now the MoveOn.org ad has been rejected while the White House ad will be played. It looks an awful lot like CBS is playing politics with the right to free speech. Of course, this is bigger than just the MoveOn.org Voter Fund. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) submitted an ad that was also rejected. We need to let CBS know that this practice of arbitrarily turning down ads that may be "controversial" – especially if they're controversial simply because they take on the President – just isn't right. To watch the ad that CBS won't air and sign the petition to CBS to run these ads, go to: http://www.moveon.org/cbs/ad/ MoveOn.org will deliver the petition by email directly to CBS headquarters. Thanks. ... Link Next page |
