For those Americans seeking information resources on disability care, disability rights, disability advocacy and current legislation hearings pending on two crucial changes that must be made to enable those in dependent care to live more independent lives, go to Eldercare and Disability Forum today. Links are being added daily. Two particular resources of interest are ADAPT, an activist organization, and Half the Planet, another cross-disability advocacy organization.

MiCASSA and "Money Follows the Person" legislation is proposed and enduring a tortuously-slow path through committees at this time. On April 7 there is a committee meeting in Washington DC, chaired by Iowa Senator Chuch Grassley. This meeting would not have been set if it were not for the "Lie In" and "Crawl In" by activists from ADAPT. BTW, I am a new member, also a Mother Bear, who wants to do whatever it takes to draw attention to these issues. Societal change must happen to give those who are disabled and need independent living supports and funding to have an appropriate place to live in the least restrictive setting. Otherwise, a person such as my 24 year old son must live in a facility that is like a nursing home, not the way most adults would want to live! Can you imagine being 24 and condemned to live in a prison - oops, I mean institution - oops, I mean "facility"?
